A "pony" just means a new feature on the site. The term arose in the Feature Requests category in
MetaTalk. If you envision yourself as a little girl being asked what you want for Christmas, you might say, "Categories on
AskMetaFilter and a killfile. Oh, and a
pony!" Although technically
[Mo Nickels] made the
[first mention of ponies on MetaTalk],
[thirteen] must get credit for the concept of
[pony-as-feature]. Ponies are a
MetaFilter InJoke.
Arguably sourced from Calvin and Hobbes cartoon where Suzie wishes for Calvin to be nicer, and says "While I'm dreaming, I'd like a pony."
